Toronto's mayor says pedestrians will get a head start at 80 intersections around the city by the end of this year.
Mayor John Tory laid out the details of the Leading Pedestrian Intervals Program Friday morning.
He told NEWSTALK 1010's Moore in the Morning that city staff chose these intersections because of a larger than average number of car and pedestrian collisions.
"It's been done all over the place," Tory said. "The net result from all of those other cities...has been a 60 percent, on average, reduction in the number of collisions between cars and pedestrians."
The program will allow pedestrians to begin crossing the street five seconds before vehicles get a green light.
Tory says this is already in place at 12 intersections around the city.
