Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is calling for more transparency and accountability from former Canada's former governors general.
He says those who used to hold the vice-regal post deserve continued financial support once they retire.
But he says the government will review the program that provides it to determine what he called ``best practices.''
Trudeau made the pledge after Postmedia reported that former governor general Adrienne Clarkson had billed taxpayers for more than a million dollars since leaving the job in 2005.
Besides their pensions, former governors general get lifetime public funding for office and travel expenses through a policy that's existed since 1979.
Rideau Hall is defending the practice, but supporting Trudeau's plan to review it.
Conservative M-P Gerard Deltell is calling on Clarkson to publicly explain her expenses, but says it's premature to call for a cap on such expenses in future.
