Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders doesn't buy the idea that officers are burned out.
He joined NEWSTALK 1010's Moore in the Morning on Tuesday to respond to claims by the police union that officers are stressed and under-staffed.
"If I see a reduction in paid-duty attendance, then I'm going to say my men and women are burned out," Saunders said. "I'm not seeing that yet."
Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack said on Monday that officers are at a "breaking point."
Responding to the chief's comments Tuesday, McCormack told NEWSTALK 1010's Jerry Agar, "you've still gotta pay the bills."
He contends that paid duty and policing duties are, "quite different functions."
Earlier this year, the police services board approved a transformational task force report that made 32 recommendations on how the force can modernize. The report called for a culture change, with more focus on community policing and use of technology.
Saunders claims that since then, he's moved hundreds more officers to the front line. He says he wants to maximize the use of resources by having officers focus on law enforcement, "not doing custodial things which we're doing right now."
McCormack doesn't disagree, but says officers are still doing those things.
