A dog has been killed after Peel Regional Police say it was intentionally mowed down by an apparent stranger.
The dog was out for a walk with its owner, a 57-year-old man on Saturday afternoon near Mississauga's Heartland Town Centre
Const. Rachel Gibbs says a female driver waved the pair across Duford Dr. But as the man and dog stepped onto the roadway, police allege the driver accelerated and veered toward them.
"The victim was able to escape from the path of the vehicle but accused intentionally struck the dog. The victim didn't sustain any injuries but his dog unfortunately succumbed to injuries at the scene," Gibbs tells NEWSTALK 1010.
It does not appear the man and the driver knew each other.
Gibbs could not say what reason the woman might have had for wanting to hurt the dog but that mental health issues will be explored.
38-year-old Maryam Atia is charged with killing or injuring an animal, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and assault with a weapon.
