Toronto Police have launched a six-month pilot project, testing full body scanners.
As a matter of fact, with this roll-out, they become the first police service in the country to test the new technology.
It will be used in lieu of a strip search in many cases, but won't eliminate the need for some to completely disrobe.
The scanners will be used to find contraband or evidence.
If a suspect refuses the scan, then they could be subjected to a strip search.
Toronto Police says the new technology ensures the safety of everyone involved, both police and suspects.
The data will be stored for 30-days if nothing is found.
Toronto Police conducts 55 thousand strip searches annually.
