The union representing Toronto police officers says the force has reached a "breaking point," and it has launched a campaign calling for a stop to cuts.
A website dubbed Stop the Toronto Police Cuts says that 500 officer positions have been cut since 2010, and another 400 positions will be lost by 2019.
"We have hit a crisis point," Toronto Police Association president Mike McCormack tells our sister TV station CP24. "We are being constantly being asked to do more with less, and we are very concerned right now that it is having an impact on public safety and officer safety."
McCormack says there is an inadequate level of staffing at Toronto police.
The campaign asks people to contact the police board, asking "politicians to put public safety ahead of their cost-cutting agendas and reinvest in frontline community policing."
Earlier this year, the board approved a transformational task force report that made 32 recommendations on how the force can modernize. The report called for a culture change, with more focus on community policing and use of technology.
