Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed one Canadian was killed and four others were hurt Thursday when a van plowed into crowds of tourists on a popular street in Barcelona.
Trudeau is offering his condolences to the family members and friends of those injured.
He calls the loss of innocent people ``senseless'' and calls on people around the world to stand firm against the spread of hate and intolerance.
Trudeau says efforts to divide people will only ``strengthen our resolve.''
The Vancouver Police Department has identified the Canadian killed as Ian Moore Wilson, the father of an officer. Staff Sgt. Fiona Wilson's mother was also injured in the attack.
In a statement she released, Staff Sgt. Wilson describes her father as "compassionate, generous, adventurous, and always game for a lively debate, a good book, exploring new places, and a proper-sized pint." The officer also thanked those who focused on her mother's urgent medical attention and aftercare.
In total, 13 people were killed in Barcelona and another in a separate attack in the nearby resort town of Cambrils. As many as 100 were injured.
