There are reports today that Prime Minister Trudeau's best friend and closest political advisor, Gerald Butts - who resigned amid the SNC Lavalin scandal earlier this year - is back in the Liberal fold.
Our media partner CTV News says that a senior party official confirmed the rumours.
Reports indicate that Butts is involved in preparations for the Liberal's campaign - leading up to the October 21st federal election.
His role is being described as an "advisory position to the prime minister", but reports are that Butts will not be running the campaign.
The news comes just five months after Butts resigned amid the SNC Lavalin scandal and accusations that he pressured then Attorney-General Jody Wilson-Raybould to encourage federal prosecutors to back off on pursuing criminal proceedings against SNC and instead pursue a remediation agreement with the engineering giant.
SNC Lavalin was charged by the RCMP, in 2015, with fraud and corruption in connection to questionable contracts in Libya.
The news of Butts likely return and the SNC Lavalin scandal are sure to be sticking points for critics of the Prime Minister and the Liberal Party of Canada leading up to the election this fall.
