The plan was to have a new highway connect Vaughan and Milton, clearing up some congestion on the 401 and on local roads.
Highway 413, or the GTA West Corridor was cancelled by the Ministry of Transportation on Friday, because they say the road was not the best way to address changing transportation needs.
But what really stings for the opposition, is the fact that the environmental assessment was never completed.
"The Liberals have already spent 14 million dollars studying this environmental assessment, and they are not ugoing to complete it. It's offensive." says PC MPP for Dufferin-Caledon, Sylvia Jones. She also sits as the infrstructure critic.
She insists business owners, land owners and municipalities were all in favour of the move to build the extra lanes.
In a statement, the province says "Ontario has accepted an expert advisory panel's recommendation that a proposed highway in the GTA West corridor is not the best way to address changing transportation needs.
After carefully reviewing the GTA West Advisory Panel's advice, a narrower corridor that is approximately one-third of the size of the analysis area of the environmental assessment will be protected from development while the province assesses what infrastructure, such as new transit or utilities, will be needed to support the growing region.
In light of the panel's recommendation, the transportation needs of the corridor will be evaluated from a regional perspective through the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) Transportation Plan, which considers the many ways people and goods move around the region, and will incorporate new and emerging transportation technologies into future projects."
