An emergency board meeting was held at Ryerson University Friday evening for students to get some answers in a student union spending scandal.
The president and vice-president of Ryerson Students' Union (RSU) have been accused of putting $250,000 on a company credit card over an eight-month span, according to a story which was first published in the student newspaper The Eye Opener.
Some of the purchases included those related to a trip to Casino Rama, a Toronto nightclub and the LCBO.
Since the story's publication, union president Ram Ganesh has received death threats. Because of that, he did not appear at Friday evening's meeting.
Students have been calling for transparency in the form of receipts and explanations of the expenditures. However, those who attended the meeting - which was closed to media - say they were unsatisfied with the outcome.
"It was simply a whole lot of nothing," one student told NEWSTALK1010's media partner CP24. "There were no concrete answers, a lot of things were manoeuvred, a lot of 'I-don't-know' answers, a lot of questions were directed to individuals who in my opinion, they had nothing to do with it."
News editor of The Eye Opener, Raneem Alozzi, says the president and vice-president should never have had access to a credit card in the first place, but they obtained two of them after an office reorganization back in May 2018.
"People's and students' biggest concern is that so many of these statements don't seem to add up," she told The Night Side's Barb DiGiulio Friday evening. "So many of these places were never advertised for students. We never heard of events going on at The Rec Room or at clubs or anything."
In a statement released on Wednesday, Ryerson University said it plans to request a forensic audit of RSU's finances.
RSU operates separately from the university, but students pay fees toward it.
