Toronto Police spent Tuesday morning scouring the area of Sheppard Ave E and Warden Ave for the driver of a truck who hit a 76-year-old man and left him for dead.
It happened at about 8:15 a.m. Monday as the senior tried to cross Aragon Ave. A dark-coloured pickup hit the man while trying to make a turn.
"The pickup made the right-hand turn and came to a stop for a short period of time and then continued eastbound on Sheppard Avenue, leaving the 76-year-old man lying in the roadway," Toronto Police const. Clint Stibbe said Tuesday.
Stibbe does not see how the driver could not have known what they had done.
"It's actually sad and somewhat disgusting," Stibbe said. "That's a human being. We don't leave people behind like that."
The man's injuries were at first thought not to be life-threatening but showed themselves to be more serious once he was admitted to hospital. At one point the man had no heartbeat and was not breathing but doctors were able to revive him. He remains in hospital just clinging to life.
Stibbe said officers planned to stop drivers of dark-coloured pickups near Warden and Sheppard Tuesday as well as checking residential areas closeby. He stresses that most collisions happen very close to the driver's home or place of work.
