The debate over the one-stop Scarborough subway is done...for now.
Mayor John Tory's motion to approve the McCowan alignment passed 26-18. Staff recommended the alignment because the station would properly serve both sides of McCowan Road and would provide the fastest route between Scarborough Centre and Kennedy Station.
Tory's motion to prevent any delay of planning a revised bus terminal also passed 31-5.
Councillor Josh Matlow had moved a motion directing staff to conduct a business case analysis comparing the LRT vs. subway but it failed 17-27.
Councillor Ainslie saw a couple of his motions given the green light. First, that the Eglinton East LRT and Scarborough subway extension be considered as one project in the future passed 38-6. Second, for staff to draft a report outlining a timetable and funding plan for the Eglinton East LRT passed 33-11.
The estimated cost of the Scarborough subway is $3.5 billion. Mayor Tory says hundreds of millions of dollars in savings could be found in the design stage.
