A male driver is dead after a single car collision on Highway 403 near Eglinton Ave. early Saturday morning.
Through a video released on Periscope Saturday morning, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt confirmed the victim is a 29 year old man from Whitby, and was pronounced dead on scene after the car he was driving crashed into a concrete guide rail, just north of Eglinton on Highway 403 westbound in the express lanes, travelling the wrong way.
"The collision was absolutely catastrophic it was devastating. The driver was killed on impact and there was only a single driver in the vehicle at the time."
Schmidt adds police got multiple calls from drivers on the highway about a car going the wrong way, but were unable to track it down in time.
"Members from the Port Credit OPP were responding to calls of a possible wrong way driver on highway 403. Sadly before the officers could get into position to intecept this vehicle, the collision took place killing the driver."
The highway was closed down for hours as police investigated the circumstances surrounding the single vehicle crash. Schimdt conceeds it's very early in the investigation to determine what may have caused the crash, but are taking all aspects into account.
"Whether or not alcohol was a factor or any other type of impairment what distraction or any other issues are around it."
The highway has since reopened to traffic.
