The province's special investigations unit has cleared three Toronto police officers after a 30-year-old man was shot and killed in March 2016.
The SIU says that the incident started in Ottawa with an armed bank robbery. Ottawa police called their Toronto counterparts to let them know the suspect was on his way to Toronto to meet with a friend.
Toronto police contacted the friend and waited for the suspect at their meet-up point.
When the 30-year-old man got out of a cab, the SIU says he started yelling at the officers, "What are you going to do?"
The man was holding a pellet gun, which looked like a handgun, according to the SIU. When the suspect pointed the gun at one of the officers, the SIU says three officers shot at him. He was killed.
“There is no question that the three subject officers were acting in the course of their duty when they attended the address on Bayview Avenue in order to arrest the man," the SIU director says in a statement. "There were ample grounds to believe that he had committed an armed robbery earlier in the day. The only issue that I need to consider is whether the shooting was justified. There is no doubt in my mind that it was."
