A special weather statement has been issued for the GTA.
"It pretty much includes all of the GTA. There's a special weather statement in effect from the Niagara Peninsula, around the west end of Lake Ontario through Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Toronto and also portions of York and Durham region and then we go eastwards towards the Prince Edward County area," maps out meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
In addition to what fell overnight, Environment Canada is warning an additional 20-30mm of rain could be experienced. "By the end of this event, some areas could be looking at storm totals of over 40mm," says Coulson.
It's all tied into a slow moving, low pressure system that's in Ohio, will drift eastwards and push north.
By 8 a.m. Toronto Pearson had recorded 12mm of rain; the Environment Canada office in downtown Toronto had recorded 19mm.
Coulson says there are already reports of localized pooling and flooding in some parts of the GTA.
With all the rain we've seen this month in the GTA, have we broken a record for May? "We are going to have to crunch the numbers when we see the final totals from this particular event. We've seen a bit of a break, though. We had a fair amount of rainfall during the first week of May and then some spotty shower activity since then hasn't really added a huge amount to the overall total. Certainly this event with the type of amounts we're looking at, some areas could end up with 30-40mm, it's likely going to push May above normal rainfall amounts but I don't think we're going to be approaching anything in terms of records," he answers.
