A couple of communities in the GTA have already decided it will take the province up on its offer to opt out of allowing private retail Cannabis stores within their boundaries.
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti says when the proposed legislation is passed, the city will decline. City council feels there are too many outstanding questions regarding the economic and social impact of the retail system.
Furthermore, provincial funding of $40 million over two years or $1.40 per capita is well short of YRP's estimates of $5.92 per capita.
The Town of Richmond Hill is also more than likely to take a hard pass on allowing the retail stores. Mayor Dave Barrow says the majority of its community, a population of just over 200,000, has voice opposition to the idea.
In Mississauga, Mayor Bonnie Crombie admits the new private retail model will pose challenges but vows to address those. She is also promising that no private retail Cannabis store will open before community consultations.
