The OSPCA has charged Dr. Mahavir Rekhi with 16 counts of animal cruelty, relating to alleged abuse caught on video by his own employees.
The owner of the Skyway Animal Hospital in St Catharines faces eight counts of causing unnecessary pain and suffering to an animal, and another eight of failing to provide suitable and adequate care for an animal.
The investigation started back in September of last year, and the OSPCA said it focused on the videos that were released to the media.
He'll be in court in July.
Dr. Rekhi was already suspended for 10 months and fined $10,000 last August, following an investigation by the College of Veternarians of Ontario. Once reinstated, he went straight back to work.
Punishment for the criminal animal cruelty charges could range from never being able to own an animal again, to fines of up to $10,000 or even five years in jail.
