A little more than 24 hours after it began, a strike by waste collection workers affecting as many as 160,000 homes in Peel Region is over.
Jason Ottey with Labourers' International Union of North America (LiUNA) tells NEWSTALK 1010 a tentative deal between roughly 140 striking workers and their employer, Emterra Environmental was reached around 1 or 2 a.m. It did not stay tentative for long. The agreement was ratified by members of Local 183 a little after 8 a.m.
Ottey did not have anything to share about the local's first ever contract Friday but employees had been seeking wages and benefits that mirrored those given to other waste collectors in Peel Region.
Emterra's garbage trucks will start to rumble again through Caledon, Brampton and Mississauga Friday.
"The drivers are resuming their routes today and through the weekend," Ottey tells NEWSTALK 1010. "They are...identifying priority areas first and then they will be hitting the rest of the household regions."
Peel Region says garbage, recycling or organics that has already been wheeled to the curb but not yet picked up will be collected over the weekend.
