If you're the parent of a young child, medical experts say you need to be more vigilant about the nursery products you use every day.
A new study from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital shows that every 8 minutes, a child three years of age or younger ends up in the emergency room because of a fall from a baby carrier, crib/mattress, or a stroller. The number of injuries has increased the past 8 years.
Most of the injuries, 80 per cent, are to the head, face or neck.
"The injuries that we're seeing now are really concerning, because these are kids less than the age of 3 and these are head and neck injuries... and these can be devastating in little children," says NEWSTALK 1010 chief medical analyst Dr. Mitch Shulman.
Dr. Shulman says that even though there have been improvements made to baby products over the years, and dangerous ones like baby walkers are now banned, parents still have to be very careful.
The study also says that 80 per cent of recalled products stay in families' homes.
Dr. Shulman says there are four things parents should do:
- Research the product
- Read the manual
- Register with the manufacturer so that they can contact you when there is a recall
- Check for recalls yourself
