A new study shows just how hard it is for Canadians to limit the amount of sugar they eat everyday.
Public Health Ontario looked at 40-thousand packaged foods and drinks in the country, and they found that two-thirds of products have added sugar.
The authors are also concerned that some products that are marketed as healthy also contain added sugar.
Eating too much sugar can lead to health implications like weight gain and high blood pressure.
Nutritionists say that your body digests added sugar in a different way from natural sugar that you find in, say, fruit. For example, the fiber in an apple slows down the release of sugar.
Nutritionist Lianne Phillipson, of Sprout Right, says you should have no more than 12 teaspoons of sugar a day. A can of pop can have as much as 13 teaspoons, and a granola bar might have half that amount.
Phillipson says an easy calculation you can do at the grocery store is divide the amount of sugar in grams by 4, to get the amount of sugar a product has in teaspoons. So if a granola bar has 8g of sugar, that is about 2 teaspoons.
