It's "back to school" for some taxi drivers in Toronto, today.
A training course begins at Centennial College. It's in response to the city cancelling its mandatory 17-day course in May as a way of leveling the playing field with UberX.
Beck Taxi is making it a requirement for all of its drivers that got their licence as early as May.
Operations Manager Kristine Hubbard says the one-week course will include a refresher on customer service, disability awareness, and defensive driving.
Hubbard says drivers will also learn more about Toronto. "They're going to cover things like important landmarks in the city. If someone gets into a taxi and needs to go to the closest hospital, it's important for drivers to be able to provide that service. For tourists, knowing important landmarks."
3,500 new taxi drivers have been licenced in Toronto since the training was eliminated in May.
