The Toronto District School Board is laying out new guidelines to make sure parents are told sooner, rather than later, if their children aren't at school.
The Toronto Star reports, staff have been told that parents should be notified no later than 75 minutes after the start of class.
It comes after the disappearance of a 14-year-old boy last week. He was abducted on Wednesday, forced into a Jeep near his home, allegedly over his step brother's drug debt.
He never made it to school but no one told his parents until 6 o'clock that evening.
The boy was found safe on Thursday night though police described him as "dishevelled."
Four staff members at Newtonbrook Secondary are still on home assignment as the board looks into how this happened.
A TDSB spokesperson tells the Star that the board has always required teachers to submit attendance and notify parents when a student is absent, but the timing of those calls has varied between schools.
The board is now reviewing its attendance policies.
