Are we getting closer to a day where cars and cyclists can actually get along?
There's fascinating research being done in Pittsburgh involving self driving cars that could end the ongoing battle on the roads.
Engineers are trying to find ways that would allow bicycles to communicate with self-driving cars.
Arguably the toughest challenge is that its difficult enough to get a computer to predict what other vehicles will do, but its particularly tricky to predict the path of a bicycle and the human at the controls.
However, autonomous vehicles are learning. Uber is testing a fleet in Pittsburgh and so far the reaction from cyclists has been positive.
Many say they would rather ride alongside a computerized car than one with a human at the wheel.
Bicycle advocate Eric Boerer of Bike Pittsburgh tells National Public Radio in the US that the advantage is the machines don't get angry -- they don't have road rage.
A company called Waymo, which researches and develops technology related to autonomous vehicles, has programmed it's vehicles to pass cyclists according to the law, giving three feet of clearance.
Waymo says if the car can't do that safely, it'll wait for the next opportunity to make that possible.
