The innocence of young love has ended with criminal charges being laid against a Toronto teen.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested last Sunday, accused of posting naked pictures of his teenage girlfriend on Instagram and Snapchat.
The pair had been dating for 10 months and the photos appeared online after they broke up.
Unfortunately, Toronto Police can't say this is uncommon.
"We are finding with the younger generation, younger kids, they have a rather myopic view thinking that they're just sharing this with someone that they trust and not thinking ahead of time to what happens after trust may be broken," says Cst. Victor Kwong.
He says there can never be any amount of victim blaming. "The only reason we tell people to not take photos is because that often they're shared under a level of trust and, in time, you never know what can happen to that trust."
It's also a growing problem among adults. "What we're finding is there's an extortion element. There is also the vindictive part of former partners but the extortion part, we're finding a lot of men who are being victimized. It appears that women get the message, it's been instilled in them. With men, for some reason, we're finding a lot of victims who believe they were sharing pictures, doing things on the Internet with a girl but it's always under a cloak that they are capturing those pictures and videos to extort them in the future," he explains.
