A 16-year-old boy is in some trouble, accused of staging his own kidnapping to get money from his parents.
York Regional Police say officers were shown a video of the supposed victim bound, gagged and wearing a blindfold. The video came with a text message demanding the parents pay $1 million for his release.
About an hour and a half later, police say the teen was found in a restaurant in Richmond Hill.
They say the boy had recently arrived in Canada from China.
Constable Andy Pattenden says police take these cases extremely seriously and, "we devote a lot of front line resources and investigative resources right away."
The teen is charged with public mischief.
