Toronto Police say they have charged a 17-year-old boy with first-degree murder in the death of a cyclist near Dufferin and Dundas streets, late Saturday afternoon.
Officers allege that at about 5:30 p.m., Aaron Rankine-Wright, 19, was leaving his home at Frankish Avenue and Sheridan Avenue on a bike, when he was followed and then struck by a dark SUV.
The SUV then mounted the curb and hit a cement block and metal fence post.
At that point, three individuals got out of the vehicle, and began kicking and punching Rankine-Wright while he was on the ground. Rankine-Wright was later pronounced dead in hospital.
"The cause of death was determined to be a stab wound to the chest," said Det. Sgt. Mike Carbone at a news conference.
The 17-year-old was arrested on Sunday and made a court appearance the same day. The boy cannot be identified due to his age.
Carbone said police still need the public's help in identifying the two other individuals inside the vehicle. They are described as male, in their teens to early 20's, and they were wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident. They were last seen running northbound towards Dundas.
"We received a great deal of support from the community," Carbone said. "Based on that information and the assistance of a forensic exam of the vehicle and of the scene, we're able to identify this (charged) individual positively."
"We're hoping that this appeal will assist us in identifying the other two individuals."
This is Toronto's 39th homicide of 2018.
