Toronto Police say a 32-year-old gained the trust of parishioners at two places of worship for the last year, and then used it to sexually assault young girls, sometimes in church.
William Claveria is also accused of trying to distribute child porn, along with a slew of other offences in the 22 charges he faces.
"They are absolutely devastated," said Sex Crimes Unit Det. Cst. Don Bai about the pastors at the places of worship involved. "They never thought that this would happen to their house."
Police were first tipped off back in March when Facebook provided information to U.S. authorities that somebody was disturbing child abuse material online.
The file was eventually linked back to Toronto, with police raiding a home in the Bathurst and Sheppard area in mid-June.
Police found images and video of a man sexually assaulting children, three of which have been located and are safe, Bai said.
"Some of the videos that we have in our possession, they took place actually at the places of worship," he said.
Bai said Claveria wasn't an official member of either place of worship, but frequented them often over the last year.
"They trusted him, he had access to their children and I believe he used this trust and he broke this trust and that's how he got access to their children," he said.
Bai added there are definitely other victims and they are encouraging families who may have interacted with Claveria to come forward.
Bai wouldn't give the ages of the victims, only saying they were pre-pubescent.
He is charged with:
-Two counts of Possession Child Pornography
-Two counts of Access Child Pornography
-Distribute Child Pornography
-Five counts of Sexual Assault
-Five counts of Sexual Interference
-Six counts of Make Child Pornography
-Voyeurism
