Toronto City council has moved forward with new plans to require those who sell vaping products, to have a licence.
The move was approved without debate and would require specialty stores, convenience stores and gas stations to have a licence starting on April 1st of next year.
Essentially, it's a move to track who is selling vape products in Toronto, at any given time.
The city will also require retailers to pay a licencing fee of $645, with the annual renewal of $315.
Anyone who applies for a licence would have to pass a criminal background check, as well as register under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act.
The move comes in the wake of a provincial government move to ban the promotion of vaping products in stores and gas stations.
There's been one Canadian case of a vaping-related illness in London, while another person fell severely ill in Quebec.
In the US, hundreds of mysterious deaths and hospitalizations have been traced back to vaping.
Carleton Grant, the Executive Director of Toronto's Municipal Licencing and Standards Department, says vaping in Toronto is widespread, with over 14 hunderd known sellers in the city.
