There are calls for Toronto city hall to remember an important factor in convincing commuters to leave their car at home.
One city councillor says more attention needs to be paid to the city's supply of parking at major transit hubs.
The issue came to light late last year, when a busy commuter lot along the University-Spadina line closed so that construction, before a new one was ready to go at Yorkdale Mall.
Plans to shut down the lot were laid in 2009, in a development proposal for the site.
Many drivers complained the move seal off hundreds of spaces at Wilson Station was made little or no notice from authorities.
Locals say the aftermath means their neighbourhoods are swamped with frantic morning drivers who rush to snap up a limited number of spaces.
On Thursday, a possible fix came on the radar of the Mayor's Executive Committee.
The final motion passed at the meeting asks for the city manager to look into the possibility of setting up what York Centre Councillor James Pasternak calls a "Commuter Parking Advisory Group."
His motion says the goal would be to ensure enough parking is provided along the route of the upcoming expansion of the Spadina-University subway line into York Region, as well as "make recommendations for alternative commuter parking options."
As Pasternak's motion points out, "the recently approved Smart Track plan comes with little to no commuter parking."
The motion has the support of councillors like Public Works Chair Jaye Robinson.
She believes Toronto should do everything it can to make it easier for commuters to use public transit, in part, she says, because it will help reduce gridlock.
The report is due back at Executive Committee in April.
