It turns out, when you sign up to be a firefighter in Toronto, you have to deal with more than fires and car crashes.
Fire crews were called to a gas station near Victoria Park and Danforth on Monday night, when someone spotted a rather large snake in the sewer grate.
"Police were flagged down when someone noticed the 3-5 foot long snake stuck in the grate, with the tail exposed." Captain David Eckerman told NEWSTALK 1010.
Police then called up Toronto Fire to deal with the situation.
"Fire Services was able to remove the grate and bag the snake," says Eckerman.
In speaking with 3-1-1, Toronto Fire learned that someone had recently called the city, hoping to surrender the snake, but all animal control offices were closed at the time.
The snake is believed to be a python, which means the bite wouldn't be venomous.
"We certainly would have been wearing our gloves and our bunker gear," says Eckerman, so the firefighters would have little trouble handling the reptile.
It's now in the care of animal control, and Toronto Animal Services says someone has come forward claiming to be the owner of the snake.
