A move by the Wynne Liberals to make parking at the hospital more affordable seems to have created a new problem for patients and their loved ones.
Toronto Western Hospital says it has been dealing with complaints about overflowing parking lots.
"I think that patients and their families are appreciative of the break in the price (of parking) downtown but unfortunately, it also means that there is more demand on available parking," says Gillian Howard of the University Health Network, who speaks on behalf of the hospital.
"We have run out of parking in some cases."
New orders from the provincial government were handed down earlier this month that require hospitals to cut parking fees in half for frequent visitors.
The move comes as the governing Liberals attempt to tackle issues with direct impact on voters' wallets, with a provincial election about 18 months away.
A drastic cut in parking rates has caused a surge in demand, especially in downtown locations.
Hospital staff are required to vet people looking to buy the new, cheaper, long-term parking passes to make sure they are patients or are visiting a loved one.
Howard stops short of placing blame for the parking headaches at the feet of the government, but admits that all hospitals in Ontario are having to do the best they can with the way the changes were rolled out.
She says Toronto Western is monitoring the situation in attempt to find a workable solution.
"This is something that is relatively new," says Howard.
"We're going to have to work with it for a while to determine what can be done."
