'Til death do us part...or until you find out the man officiating your ceremony is a fraud.
Toronto Police have arrested a 69-year-old accused of performing marriages without authority.
On his Prideful Weddings website, Paul Cogan, also known as Paul Martin, boasts that he's performed 2,000 marriages across Ontario, serving people of all faiths and cultures.
At one time Cogan was a legal officiant, but for some reason had his authority revoked by his denomination in August 2013.
Toronto Police are unable to say why or what his denomination was.
"Because Mr. Cogan's authority was revoked he couldn't register the marriages. So, what he was doing was he would forge another officiante's signature and send the documents up to Thunder Bay to be registered," explains Detective Sgt. John Ozols.
He allegedly did this up until July of this year. "It was a particular couple that we investigated; he sent a photocopy up to the ministry, instead of the original document, which alerted the ministry. They called the officiant that was on that particular marriage license to ask why a photocopy had been sent...he advised them he had not married this couple," adds Ozols.
Police can't say how many couples thought they were being married by him during that time.
He faces five charges, including fraud and forgery.
Anyone who thinks they may have fallen victim is asked to call police.
