Members of the Toronto Police Service Human Trafficking Enforcement Team have made an arrest in connection to a human trafficking investigation.
It's alleged that between August 7 and November 30, 2016, the man coerced, exploited and forced multiple victims into the sex trade.
Police say he took all the money earned by the victims and controlled them by forcing them to ingest various illicit drugs, threatening their families and branding them with his full name.
27-year-old Mathew Maxwell of Toronto was arrested in August and charged with 16 human trafficking offences in relation to a 21-year-old woman.
Police say he was continuing to procure women from inside a correctional facility.
A second victim came forward to police and Maxwell faces another 18 charges including trafficking in persons by recruiting, forcible confinement, assault and exercising control.
Police are concerned there may be other victims.
They are asking anyone with information about Mathew Maxwell or anyone who knows someone with the name "Mathew Maxwell" tattooed on their body is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
