Its not every day allegations of witch-craft come across our desk.
That's exactly what's spelled out in a Thursday morning news briefing from Toronto Police.
Witchcraft is one of a handful of fraud-related charges faced by a 37-year old visitor from India.
Investigators believe he took advantage of a family with a sick relative.
Allegations are Murali Muthyalu told a man that he was a powerful psychic named 'Master Raghav' and convinced the alleged victim into believing he could banish evil spirits that were posessing his loved one.
Muthyalu is accused of bilking him out of $101,000.
Muthyalu is charged with pretending to practise witchcraft, fraud over $5,000, and extortion.
Canada's modern laws against witchcraft have been around for about 120 years.
They're a means to crack down on fraud.
While the charge is rare to see on a courtroom docket, there are serious penalties associated with a conviction.
The maximum punishment for witchcraft is 6 months in jail, and/or a $2,000 fine.
