Toronto Police have caught the alleged bank robber they dubbed "The Lunchtime Bandit".
Investigators believe the same man is responsible for robbing five banks along Yonge St between November 21 and December 17. Four of the robberies were carried out between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m earning him the moniker that made headlines across Canada.
In news conference on December 20, Toronto Police Staff Inspector Mike Earl called the robber caught on surveillance video a cleancut-looking "preppy punk". Earl noted the letters passed by the thief to tellers indicating that he had a gun and demanding cash were "well-written" with proper grammar.
Though no one saw a gun, Earl described the heists as violent.
"(It's about) the personal threat on the bank teller...leaning over a counter, whispering, indicating that he is armed and going to shoot you unless you provide the money. Post-traumatic stress kicks in on some of these tellers. Some of them can't return to work because of fear of the job. And so it is a violent crime and this guy needs to be apprehended."
20-year-old Michael Lilly faces five counts of robbery.
