Toronto's chief of police has had his mandate extended by a year and will now serve in the role until at least April 2021.
Mark Saunders was appointed chief in 2015, taking over for Bill Blair, who was elected to Parliament later that year and now serves as the minister for crime reduction.
Saunders says he's honoured to hold the position and proud of the officers who work under him.
The chief is currently waging a public war against gun-and-gang violence in the city, calling for additional measures to combat a rise in shootings over the summer.
The force recently received an infusion of cash from all three levels of government to bolster its guns and gangs unit.
Saunders has also expressed support for a ban on handguns in the city, something that would need federal approval.
