The mayor of Toronto says the federal government should play a more active role in curbing gun crime in Canada's largest municipal area.
John Tory commented after a particularly violent long weekend involving 14 separate shootings that harmed 17 people, some seriously.
Tory says he has already been in contact with at least one federal official after the people were wounded over a three-day period.
While no one died, several of the shooting victims remain in hospital.
The mayor hopes to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the coming weeks to reiterate a call for a handgun ban and appeal for more financial support to help stem the tide of gun violence.
But yesterday Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale sidestepped a reporters question about whether Canada will follow New Zealand's lead and ban assault-type rifles like the one used to massacre Muslims in Christchurch this year.
Speaking in Ottawa Goodale replied, ``we are examining our own circumstances and making our own Canadian decisions.''
