Toronto's Police Chief wants more tasers in the hands of his front line officers.
Mark Saunders recommends Toronto's civilian police oversight board approve a plan to spend almost $1 million on 400 tasers.
If approved, the measure would boost the number of tasers at the disposal of Toronto Police to almost 950, from 545.
It would mean that about 60 tasers would be on the road with officers on any given day.
Right now, the only cops in Toronto permitted to carry tasers are front-line supervisors, along with some specialized officers but Saunders is looking to have them distributed more widely.
It was in 2013, after the streetcar shooting death of 18-year old Sammy Yatim, that the provincial government relaxed rules surrounding law enforcement and tasers, so that individual forces could set their own policies on the devices.
The union that represents Toronto Police officers says the move to expand taser use is something they've been pushing for for years.
However, critics are concerned that giving police officers wider access to tasers will lead to more violent incidents and arrests.
In 2016, Toronto Police data shows there were close to 300 police use-of-force incidents involving tasers.
