Students at three Toronto high schools are planning to walk out of class Friday afternoon, calling on the province to take more action against allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct by teachers.
Earlier this week, the province made changes to legislation so that any teacher found guilty of sexual touching or groping loses his or her license.
Funding will also be provided to victims, for therapy and counselling.
A group of students who organized a movement called Not Just Rumours says more is needed. Their petition has received 17,000 signatures.
Sara Escallon-Sotomayor, one of the organizers and a student at Humber Collegiate Institute, says they applaud the recent changes but they don't think the province has gone far enough.
They are asking that the funding for therapy be extended to victims of sexual misconduct, harassment and intimidation. They are also calling on the province to define the term sexual misconduct.
The students are also asking for better training for administrators on dealing with allegations made by students.
The walkout is planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
