The topic of privatizing garbage east of Yonge is back on the table at Toronto City Hall.
Councillor Jaye Robinson, who is also the head of Public Works and Infrastructure released a report to her committee outlining the significant changes to how the city would measure the benefits of contracting out garbage.
Robinson says the biggest change since the idea was put on the backburner, was the new collective agreement with CUPE Local 416.
"Toronto residents want to ensure we are using their tax dollars wisely, and that means providing the best service at the lowest possible cost.
Today's report confirms that the decision to defer consideration of contracting out until a new collective agreement with CUPE 416 was reached was the right one.
In light of this new information, I will be bringing forward a motion at the upcoming meeting of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee asking City staff to look at various options to contract out garbage collection east of Yonge Street and report back as soon as possible."
She says since they have privatized garbage collection west of Yonge, the city is saving 11 million dollars a year.
Robinson says Mayor Tory is also on board and supports this move.
