Following the province's announcement of a joint deal between Queen's Park and Ottawa, Toronto Mayor John Tory said he was hopeful this could dig the city out of the hole the pandemic has led to.
"I can't say I'm expecting (the $1.3 billion asked for) in the sense that I know that out of a total of $4 billion they will have to allocate this as between transit and other municipal uses," Tory says. "I'm aware of the fact that there are 440 cities and towns, albeit that we're the biggest in Ontario. We have by far the biggest transit system, so I'm optimistic that a big part of our problem will be solved with these funds."
Tory has been sounding the alarm over the funds needed to keep cities running post-pandemic, and the premier pointed out in his news conference today the work that the mayor has done.
Tory said he received assurance from the province today that the money will start to flow soon.
