Toronto Mayor John Tory supports the TTC potentially recouping costs from a contractor, whose crew managed to punch a hole through the subway tunnel Tuesday, causing a big delay on Line One.
"I certainly favour a good hard look at that," Tory said Wednesday about the incident.
A construction crew working at the street level somehow broke through the tunnel, causing concrete to fall and shutting down service between St. Clair and Lawrence for four hours, including during the afternoon rush.
"Our crews had to go in overnight, put a plate on the inside of the wall and then fill it with concrete," TTC spokesperson Stuart Green told Moore in the Morning.
While Green said the contractor had the correct permits, they'll look at whether they were drilling in the correct location and Tory pointed out they weren't even doing work subway-related work.
"That may be all the more reason why we really having to look at saying to people look, if you're going to operate in close proximity of the TTC, there's an extra standard of care," he said, while acknowledging mistakes happen.
"But we can't afford to have people making mistakes without understanding there are consequences when it comes to the safety first and foremost, but also the convenience of thousands of people whose lives were disrupted yesterday," he said.
