The Toronto Parking Authority votes today on whether to build a new 24 space parking lot at Eglinton and Caledonia but some, including the mayor, think the space could be better used.
Mayor John Tory and housing advocates are calling on the city to create affordable housing on the lot.
Street parking in the area is being lost to the Crosstown LRT. Years ago, the city bought up several buildings on Eglinton with a plan to build a lot to replace those spots.
Tory has written a letter to the chair of the parking authority, voicing his "serious concerns" about the plan.
"I believe the City, through the TPA and CreateTO, has a tremendous opportunity to unlock the value of this land and to do it in a way that adds to the supply of affordable housing in Toronto," Tory writes.
