Back in June, NEWSTALK 1010 examined the issue of fare evasion on the TTC in our in-depth series: The Best Free Ride in Town.
We learned it's an issue that costs the agency millions of dollars each year.
Now, it seems there's a plan to help address it.
The TTC board is meeting on Thursday to go over the 2019 budget, including a proposal to crack down on those who don't pay.
They're proposing hiring 45 new fare inspectors and 22 transit enforcement officers.
The new hires would cost the agency $4.5 million but the report suggests that at least some of the cost would be offset by the revenue gained by making sure riders pay their fares.
With the new hires, the TTC would have 113 inspectors and 73 enforcement officers.
The plan would allow for more fare inspectors on subways and buses.
They've mainly spent their time on streetcars where riders are allowed to board at the rear doors.
The budget still needs to be approved by the TTC board and the city.
