We've had a price fixing scandal here in Canada, with regards to bread.
But now, Bumble Bee Foods in the US has declared bankruptcy, over a price fixing scandal in the US.
That company operates the Clover Leaf brand here in this country.
The company was working with two other tuna giants in the US; StarKist and Chicken of the Sea, to fix prices south of the border.
There's no evidence of price fixing, with regards to tuna in this country, officially.
"We have found some anomolies, in other words there are some periods where proices went up dramatically over six months to a year, and it's difficult to explain why." says Sylvain Charlebois from the food analytics lab at Dalhousie University.
At this point it's only speculation, since it's very difficult to find the evidence to prove price fixing.
Sadly though, it's not all that uncommon.
"We have seen scandals affecting bread, tuna, ham in Europe and sausages as well." says Charlebois.
"It's always challenging to gather enough evidence to prosecute," adds Charlebois. "Which is why we don't necessarily come out and say this is what's happening, because we don't have all of the evidence. And the Competition Bureau faces the same challenge."
It's up to the Competition Bureau in this country to make the allegations of price fixing.
