Two young children suffered serious injuries, following a three-vehicle collision on Highway 401 late Friday night.
The accident occurred on the westbound express lanes, west of Warden Avenue, just before 10:15. p.m.
According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the collision was a chain reaction after the lead car of the three had come to a stop.
"The second vehicle came in and collided with that stopped vehicle and the third vehicle, a pickup truck, then collided into that second vehicle."
Inside that second vehicle were four people, including the two children, now identified as a six-year-old and a three-year-old.
Schmidt confirms both of the kids suffered very serious injuries.
" The six-year-old has critical injuries, the three-year-old remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their status is being monitored and they're under the care of health care professionals obviously at this time."
An adult female, who suffered minor injuries, was treated and released from hospital.
As for a possible cause of the accident, Schmidt doesn't believe it involved alcohol or drug consumption.
"It appears that the collision was as a result of either driver inattention or drivers not responding to changing driving patterns ahead."
