Another senior citizen has lost their life on GTA streets after being struck by a vehicle.
The latest came Monday night in Mississauga, when a 73-year-old man was hit as he attempted to cross the road near Hurontario and Eglinton at around 7 p.m. and died of his injuries in hospital.
Speaking to our media partner CP24, Peel Police Const. Danny Marttini admitted it appears the pedestrian didn't try to cross at a marked intersection.
"This is not a crosswalk. This is a six-lane roadway that general traffic travels at 60 km/hr. Unfortunately this gentleman got about two lanes in and was struck by a vehicle travelling on the roadway."
Marttini also confirmed the driver of the vehicle remained on scene, but was so overcome with emotion about the collision, that they passed out and had to be taken to hospital for observation.
"The driver did remain on scene, they were suffering from a bit of shock. They actually fainted once they realized exactly what was taking place."
That was followed a couple of hours later by another Peel region pedestrian struck accident, in Brampton.
A woman in her 40's was struck near Queen St. and Kennedy Road just before 9:40 p.m.
She suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a trauma centre.
According to Marttini, the driver of the vehicle, a 52-year-old male, was taken into custody.
"The male driver that did strike the female did stay on scene. They have been taken into custody for excess blood alcohol."
