Part of a Scarborough neighbourhood was evacuated Wednesday as police made a frightening discovery: 13 live grenades.
The startling cache was found along with other weapons inside a home near Birchmount Rd and Lawrence Ave E
The police knock on neighbour Mark's door came at 9 p.m.
"We just were shocked," Mark tells NEWSTALK 1010. "They were telling us to evacuate because they found explosives."
Mark, his wife and their children, aged nine and 10 spent hours on a TTC bus with residents of four other homes. They were eventually allowed to return.
Toronto Police say they had gone to 85 Canlish Rd to carry out a search warrant but would not explain for what. Members of the bomb squad removed the grenades to be handed over to the Canadian Armed Forced for disposal.
30-year-old Arthur Darocha faces 15 charges including possession of an explosive substance.
Mark saw four people being taken into police custody from the home with children's outdoor toys cluttering the lawn. He says two kindergarten aged children live inside but otherwise could not share much about his next-door-neighbours.
