Toronto Police and Paramedics both say the child has been killed after being struck by an SUV, around the time school was letting out.
It was around 3:30, that police say the child was struck in a residential neighbourhood near Morningside and the 401.
The 6-year-old child was rushed to hospital, and later died of his injuries.
It happened across the street from Morrish Public School.
"When we look at the timings for schools to be released on average it's around 3:35, so it is a possibility and that's something we'll be looking into." says Toronto Police Constable Clint Stibbe.
Originally, police reported an adult had also been struck by the vehicle, but police would only say the mother was in hospital, but may have gone with her child, rather than gone because she was injured.
Police say the driver of the car is on scene and is co-operating.
The Toronto District School Board has confirmed the student was from Morrish Public School.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm a senior kindergarten student from Morrish Public School passed away this afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle on his way home from school. Staff and emergency personnel were on site immediately and did everything they could to help the 6-year-old boy. This is a tragic loss of a young life and our deepest condolences are extended to his grieving family and friends.”
