A Brampton intersection is open again after being closed for some 20 hours following a collision involving a Peel Regional Police officer.
Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing the crash at about 2 p.m. Wednesday that saw a police cruiser and minivan taxi collide at Bramalea Rd and Bovaird Dr.
A 30-year-old passenger in the taxi was taken to hospital. Doctors determined he had a serious injury. On Thursday morning, the SIU would not divulge the type of injury.
SIU spokesman Jason Gennaro said they were notified at 12:45 a.m. Thursday. He could not explain why the investigation was launched so long after the crash. In general, he says there could be a number of reasons for a gap
"One reason could that a serious injury was not determined or assessed at the time of a police interaction with a person and so that may delay notification,' Gennaro told NEWSTALK 1010 Thursday. "Sometimes it takes hospitals and doctors quite some time to determine if someone has been seriously and injured and if that serious injury meets the unit's mandate in order to launch an investigation."
Gennaro did not know at what time the police watchdog was notified of the crash.
The SIU digs into reports of death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault during an interaction with police.
